Hypostasis

Hypostasis is a celebration of resilience, transformation, and belonging. Created by Azerbaijani artist Aylal Heydarova, the painting became the pattern for the second #SavingButterflies public sculpture, developed in collaboration with asylum seekers, refugees, migrants, and local residents before being permanently installed in Wembley Park.

Inspired by the extraordinary journeys of butterflies and people, the #SavingButterflies project explores themes of migration, biodiversity, hope, and community. Through art, Aylal creates connections between environmental conservation and human experience, reminding us that movement, adaptation, and renewal are part of both nature and society.

The intricate patterns of Hypostasis reflect the diversity of the communities that contributed to the sculpture. The artwork demonstrates how collective creativity can transform public spaces into places of dialogue, inclusion, and shared identity.

Aylal Heydarova is an Azerbaijani painter whose work is inspired by her family heritage, the rich cultural traditions of Azerbaijan, and the relationship between people and nature. She began painting as a child in her father's workshop, developing a distinctive visual language influenced by pointillism, modernism, and abstraction.

Since 2024, she has been working with We Restart Charity on #SavingButterflies, a community art initiative that celebrates the resilience of both butterflies and migrants. Working alongside children, asylum seekers, refugees, and local communities, Aylal creates large-scale public artworks that promote environmental awareness, biodiversity, cultural participation, and social inclusion. Her practice demonstrates how art can build bridges between communities while inspiring collective action for a more sustainable and compassionate future.

By bringing together people from different cultures to create a shared artwork, Hypostasis celebrates the power of creativity to connect communities, protect our environment, and remind us that diversity—both human and ecological—is something to be valued and preserved.
