A Painting of Ben

This portrait tells the story of Ben, a South African artist whose life has been shaped by displacement, homelessness, and the search for belonging. Unable to return to the country where he grew up for 17 years because of the circumstances surrounding his birth, Ben has lived in 68 countries yet has never truly felt that he belonged anywhere.

While living in the UK, he experienced homelessness, sleeping rough in holes in the ground and in cemeteries while continuing to create art that explored identity and belonging. Through resilience and creativity, he found a way to express his experiences and reclaim a sense of home.

Clare Barstow's portrait celebrates the transformative power of art and reminds us that creativity can provide connection, dignity, and hope, even in the most challenging circumstances.

Ben's story highlights the importance of the right to inclusion, and protection from discrimination. It also reminds us that everyone deserves the opportunity to participate in cultural life and to express themselves creatively, regardless of their circumstances.
